GMAT: Manhattan SC Tuesday, May 5 2009

Chapter 1:

Sample question: Wrong.

Mistake: Careless

Lessons learned: Study the full sentence and understand the meaning well. Check out the singular/plural verbs.

Steps for SC:

1. Write down A B C D E in the paper (I write it horizontally for every question)

2. Read the sentence and note down the obvious erros

3. Check all the ans. choices vertically. ie, don’t reach each choice. Note down whats the different in each choice.

Split each choice into half and comare one split of all five answer choices. Filter out and mark the condensers.

Then, do the same with the next half.

4. Comare the remaining answer choices by resplitting

5. Continue to split remaining condensers until you find the answer choice.

Eg. The students came to school without their mittens and so was unable to go to recess.

Students – plural; was – singular. So, it should be “were”

Parents!!

A conversation….this was narrated by an IAF pilot to IIT students on

special seminar for HUMAN RELATION.

My parents left for our native place on Thursday and we went to the

airport to see them off. In fact, my father had never traveled by air before,

so I just took this opportunity to make him experience the same.

In spite of being asked to book tickets by train, I got them tickets on Jet

Airways. The moment I handed over the tickets to him, he was surprised to

see that I had booked them by air. The excitement was very apparent on

his face, waiting for the time of travel. Just like a school boy, he was

preparing himself on that day and we all went to the airport, right from

using the trolley for his luggage, the baggage check-in and asking for

window seat and waiting restlessly for the security check-in to happen.

He was thoroughly enjoying himself and I, too, was overcome with joy

watching him experience all these things.

As they were about to go in for the security check-in, he walked up to me

with tears in his eyes and thanked me. He became very emotional and it

was not as if I had done something great but the fact that this meant a

great deal to him.

When he said thanks, I told him there was no need to thank me. But later,

thinking about the entire incident, I looked back at my life. As a child how

many dreams our parents have made come true. Without understanding the

financial situation, we ask for cricket bats, dresses, toys, outings, etc.

Irrespective of their affordability, they have catered to all our needs.

Did we ever think about the sacrifices they had to make to accommodate

many of our wishes? Did we ever say thanks for all that they have done for

us?

Same way, today when it comes to our children, we always think that we

should put them in a good school. Regardless of the amount of donation,

we will ensure that we will have to give the child the best, theme parks,

toys, etc. But we tend to forget that our parents have sacrificed a lot for

our sake to see us happy, so it is our responsibility to ensure that their

dreams are realized and what they failed to see when they were young, it

is our responsibility to ensure that they experience all those and their life is

complete.

Many times, when my parents had asked me some questions, I have

actually answered back without patience. When my daughter asks me

something, I have been very polite in answering. Now I realize how they

would have felt at those moments.

Let us realize that old age is a second childhood and just as we take care

of our children, the same attention and same care need to be given to our

parents and elders.

Rather than my dad saying thank you to me, I would want to say sorry for

making him wait so long for this small dream. I do realize how much he has

sacrificed for my sake and I will do my best to give the best possible

attention to all their wishes.Just because they are old does not mean that

they will have to give up everything and keep sacrificing for their

grandchildren also. They have wishes, too.

Take care of your parents … For it is the least we could do ..

D Day is nearing Sunday, Jan 25 2009

I’m going to write my GMAT on Feb 4th. Preparation is on its way. Never before I thought I will get a chance to do MBA. Doing MBA is my dream. My profession is also related to business administration. Studying in a reputed business school will definitely be valuable. Your life will change drastically after you’ve finished your MBA in a reputed business school.

The first step in achieving this goal is to write GMAT and get a very good score. Ofcourse, GMAT is not the only thing which decided your admission into a top business school. But its very important.

Water or Soft Drinks?? Monday, Dec 29 2008

This new world (US) is still new to me in some ways. Especially in drinking habits. We drink water when we feel thursty. But here everyone is drinking soft drinks rather than water most of the time. I believe we should drink atleast 3 lts of water everyday. I don’t think people living here are drinking that much. If you buy water in bottles in any restaurant, it is more costly than any soft drink.  Sometimes I don’t understand the logic.

Most of the time, I don’t carry any water bottles in my bag. If I feel thursty, I’m thinking twise to buy water since its too costly. Now I should make sure that I’m not falling into the soft drink trap..

Snowy Everywhere Tuesday, Dec 23 2008

Being an Indian, I’m used to live in a hot summer day. But snow, freezing alert and minus degree celcius everything is new to me. Its been 2 months over since we came here. I worked in MNC and interacted with so many americans. That helped me a lot. US was not very new to me and I easily embraced with these people. But I’m not able to adopt with the climate though its not as cold as Seattle, Boston.

Life after marriage Friday, Dec 5 2008

First of all I’m sorry for the long delay. I was pretty busy with my marriage.

I got a guy whom i like most. I’m happy about it.

About me, I’ve been away from home for almost 11 years for my studies and work. It made a very good bond between me and my family (parents and bro). This gap helped me to understand my family very well. In my home, Each and every decisions we made were only after my approval. Even now I have all the rights in my family and in the new family. I’m happily married and loves this life a lot. I like to enjoy my life whatever comes in it.

But I too have a missing part. :(
